Unit 14 · Waves, Sound, and Physical Optics

Chapter 14.1

Waves, Sound, and the Doppler Effect

A wave on a rope carries energy from one end to the other while every piece of rope stays home. Sound does the same through air, and a passing siren proves that motion changes what you hear.

By the end

  1. 01Describe waves as energy transfer without matter transfer, transverse or longitudinal, mechanical or electromagnetic
  2. 02Relate wave speed to the medium, and wavelength, frequency, period, and speed to one another
  3. 03Write a sinusoidal wave as a function of time or of position
  4. 04Predict qualitatively how relative motion of source and observer shifts the observed frequency

In unit 14

  2. 14.2Boundaries, Polarization, and Light as a Wave
  3. 14.3Superposition, Beats, and Standing Waves
  4. 14.4Diffraction and Double-Slit Interference
